New High Strength Alloy Launched At Interplas

APPLICATIONS IN PLASTIC MOULD AND PRESS TOOL DESIGN

Carrs will shortly start to introduce a new version of its AL2000 Aluminium alloy material to be known as AL2000 PLUS. With a typical UTS of 620MPa and, much more importantly a Yield Stress of 570MPa, this material from Pechiney Rhenalu has significantly better properties than any other Aluminium tooling alloy available.

This alloy retains the high thermal conductivity associated with Aluminium, which ensures a very fast cycle time compared with steel.

High-strength Aluminium alloy is also increasingly being used in the manufacture of press tools for the base and top plates where the use of Aluminium reduces the overall tool weight by around one half in a typical case.

This ability to stop very rapidly has resulted in a 45% reduction in punch breakage in one documented case.

Machining is typically achieved in around 60% of the time taken for steel.
